  • In Ethiopian culture, greetings are marked by courtesy and a degree of formality. The prevalent form of greeting involves a handshake accompanied by direct eye contact, a gesture much gentler than what is customary in Western cultures. In more intimate relationships, individuals of the same gender may engage in a triple cheek kiss.
  • Crossing gender lines, men are advised to wait and observe if a woman extends her hand for a greeting. Rushed greetings are discouraged, and it is customary to invest time in inquiring about the well-being of the other person, their family, and their professional pursuits.
  • Addressing individuals involves the use of honorific titles along with their first names, with "Ato" for men, "Woizero" for married women, and "Woizrity" for unmarried women. It is a cultural norm to accord respect to elders by greeting them first, and when introduced to someone older or of higher status, a bow is a customary display of politeness, a practice often observed even among children.
